on October 7, 1989 hundreds of thousands of people take to the streets in Rome for the first major demonstration against racism and for immigrant rights. On 24 August the same year at Villa Literno, in the province of Caserta, had been killed a South African refugee, Jerry Essan Masslo: the first murder of a racist history of the Italian Republic.
Twenty years on, racism is not only not been defeated, but has penetrated the public and private language, culture, daily life and behavior of so much of this country.
The wind also blows of intolerance and resentment from above, from the palaces of power.
